Fire rips through downtown Penticton

Fire crews in Penticton are putting out a large blaze that ripped through the city's downtown core early Sunday morning. 3 landmark buildings have been destroyed, including Slack Alice's strip club, Bubblee's liquor store and the Chinese Laundry restaurant. A fire engine from Summerland was called to in to help as firefighters arrived at the scene at Front and Forbes Streets at around 12:30am. Front Street was closed to traffic all morning as crews battled the blaze. It doesn't appear that there was anyone in any of the buildings at the time and so far, there are no reports of injuries. Education Minister George Abbott Visits Penticton

Education Minister George Abbott was in Central Okanagan Thursday to tour Giant's Head Elementary School in Summerland and Penticton Secondary School. Abbott took time to discuss his thoughts on the current situation with the B.C. Teachers Federation. "My well of optimism is not exactly over-flowing at this point. I always loved to look forward to hearing at the end of the day that something constructive has happened at the table. BC Lawyers Enter Phase Two of Service Withdrawals

B-C Trial Lawyers will be withdrawing services from February 1st until the 14th and the job action will directly affect anyone in Penticton that requires council. Hundreds of lawyers across the province argue that the legal aid system needs to change and more funding is needed. Bentley Doyle with the Trial Lawyers Association says the withdrawals will affect all communities. Man Busted after Evading Police

On January 5th police pulled over a vehicle which they believed was connected to  heroin trafficking. The male driver and female passenger managed to speed off but knocked down an officer in the process leaving them with minor injuries. Just over two weeks later RCMP found the driver, 30 year old Jonathan Michael Orgill and arrested him. Orgill, who had heroin, cocaine and meth on him now faces various charges. Penticton Students Rally for Change

Today is the Canadian Federation of Students day of action. Students at Okanagan College in Penticton will be gathering to protest tuition hikes and student debt. Ross Saunders from the OC Students Union explains what the day is all about. "The day of Action is basically an attempt to capture media attention across Canada. The Students Union's across Canada will be rallying and participating in various events, just trying to get attention to highlight some issues facing  secondary education today."  Saunders also says that problems facing students are reaching critical levels. Grey Cup is Coming to Penticton

The Grey Cup will be in Penticton this morning along with a few BC Lions Players. The Cup will make its first stop at KVR Middle School where the students there will have a chance to touch a bit of history. From 10:15 a.m. until 11 a.m. the Cup will be at Rona at 348 Duncan Avenue West. Geroy Simon, Angus Reid, and J.R. LaRose from the BC Lions will be available to meet and take photos with.
